    Job Summary

    The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) provides direct care for infants in the neonatal unit in collaboration with the neonatologists. Maintain specific expertise, experience and knowledge in the assessment, treatment and management of ill newborns along with providing nursing administrative leadership and expertise in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Demonstrate proficiency in neonatal clinical procedures. Responsible to coordinate, partner and collaborate with clinical experts in developing and implementing care practices that support the quality compliance expectations of the organization. Integrates education, research, management, leadership and consultation into clinical practice. The collaborative practice includes accepting referrals from, consulting with, cooperating with or referring to other health care providers in order to promote comprehensive and continuity of care in both primary care and specialty practice. Evaluate the infant's response to the interventions in order to determine the progress towards goal attainment and to revise the database, diagnosis and plan of care when necessary. Obtain a comprehensive, accurate and systematic assessment of the health status of the infant through data collection including infant's history, gestational age assessment, physical assessment, lab work and diagnostic testing.

    Assist the physician in daily and long-term management of patient care. Refer to physician for management of any infant whose overall medical care exceeds the scope of practice for the neonatal nurse practitioner. Referrals and consults are made based on findings outside the scope of practice in consultation with the designated physician. The plan of care will help the infant attain and maintain the highest level of health, well-being and quality of life attainable. Institute emergency measures and treatments in situations when applicable. May prescribe medications and or devices in mutual agreement with physicians, on medications commonly prescribed and renewed for patients in the neonatal setting. Documentation of collaboration and consultation are kept in the infant's record.

    Formulate a plan of care in conjunction with the nursing staff, family, caregivers and other members of the health team to provide for diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, restorative and rehabilitative needs of the infant. Provide patient's family members and other caregivers with information needed to promote health, reduce risk factors, or prevent disease or disability. Clinical impressions and recommendations are decided and implemented and discussed with family members or caregivers. Provides guidance regarding self-management on prevention and treatment plan for health issues, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.

    May participate in clinical research studies. Incorporates evidence based practice guidelines into care. Maintain current knowledge of state legal regulations for advanced practice provider practices, including reimbursement of services. Participate in in-service events regarding health related issues to staff, family members, and caregivers. Keep abreast of regulatory processes and payer systems such as Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and private sources, as applicable. Demonstrate extensive advanced knowledge of medical principles, practices and techniques.

    Designated medical center facilities may also provide air transportation. The neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) will deliver nursing care to patients prior to and during air and ground inter-facility and/or scene transport.

    Qualifications

    Completion of a master’s, postmaster’s, or doctorate from an neonatal nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Licensing prior to August 1, 1995 in ND, master's degree in nursing is preferred.

    Demonstrated current competence and provision of care, treatment, or services for an adequate volume of patients in the past twelve months, or completion of master’s/post-master’s degree program in the past twelve months. Experience must correlate to the privileges requested.

    Current licensure by the applicable state board of nursing for advanced practice. Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances.

    Current certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or an equivalent nationally recognized body. Submit current Scope of Practice that has been approved by either the North Dakota State Board of Nursing or the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.

    Anticipating as a part of the flight team additional certifications may include: Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
