Takes patient history, conducts visual acuity screenings, and performs various technical procedures, including refractometry, tonometry, lensometry, and keratometry. Being an Ophthalmic Technician prepares patients for exams and procedures. Operates, maintains, and sanitizes ophthalmic equipment and instruments. Additionally, Ophthalmic Technician may assist physicians in performing minor surgical and laser procedures. May dispense contact lenses. Typically requires an associate degree. May require Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA). May require Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT). Typically reports to a manager. Job Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in medical office procedures, exceptional patient care skills, and a passion for eye care.
Duties:
- Perform preliminary patient work-up including history taking, visual acuity measurement, and intraocular pressure assessment
- Assist ophthalmologists with patient examinations and minor surgical procedures
- Conduct diagnostic tests such as visual field testing, OCT scans, and fundus photography
- Educate patients on contact lens insertion, removal, and care
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records using electronic medical record systems
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality
- Clean and maintain ophthalmic instruments and equipment
Experience:
- Previous experience working in an ophthalmology practice or eye care facility is preferred
- Proficiency in medical terminology and familiarity with optical concepts
- Knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control protocols
- Familiarity with Epic or similar electronic health record systems is a plus
- Strong understanding of ocular anatomy and physiology
- Experience with medical billing procedures is beneficial
- Prior retail sales experience is advantageous
