Paramedic provides emergency advanced life support care to patients who are ill and/or injured. Conducts patient assessment to determine the extent of an illness or injury and to establish and prioritize medical procedures to follow. Being a Paramedic performs life support procedures or administers oxygen. Dispenses antiseptic solution to prevent infection, starts and administers intravenous fluids. Additionally, Paramedic performs other emergency medical procedures needed to stabilize patient during transport. Provides an update on patient's condition and status of treatments when transferring to other medical personnel. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in an accredited Paramedic program. Requires Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The Paramedic works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function.     • Position Summary
      • Under general direction, provides basic and advanced emergency medical care for assessment/evaluation, treatment, stabilization, and transport of the ill and injured for 911 response, inter-facility transfers, event medical support, and disasters.         • Provides and directs timely, efficient basic and advanced emergency care to the ill and injured of all ages at the scene, en route to the hospital and during transportation from facility-to-facility utilizing basic and advanced abilities, skills, and techniques in accordance with protocols and guidelines established by MGMC EMS Medical Director and in accordance with the MICS protocols, policies, and procedures; and governing rules, regulations.
        • Maintains appropriate communication utilizing methods available such as radios and phones with physician on duty and receiving hospital personnel to relate patient condition/information, facilitate appropriate patient care needs, and obtain orders for treatment when appropriate.
        • Transports patients to their appropriate destination, continuing to provide appropriate care and patient advocacy until the responsibility for the patient has been transferred to an appropriate medical professional and report has been given.
        • Acts at all times in the interest of safety and security.
        • Collaborates with patient, family, physicians, MGMC interdisciplinary team, community EMS providers, law enforcement personnel, fire personnel, referring/receiving hospital personnel, public, and other personnel to coordinate care delivery ensuring safe, quality patient care in all situations.
        • Ensures that the vehicles and equipment are ready for use at the beginning of the shift and after every call including appropriate cleaning and disinfecting of the interior and exterior of the vehicle; appropriate cleaning and disinfecting of equipment; inspecting; restocking, completing checklists; and performing or ensuring routine maintenance
        • Inspects for cleanliness and performs the appropriate duties to ensure work environment is safe, clean, free from clutter and sanitary.
        • Operates emergency vehicles in a safe manner under all conditions for emergency and non-emergency responses using appropriate care and caution in accordance with laws, EMS regulations, MICS policy, and the principles of safe emergency vehicle operation.
        • Acts as an EMT and/or EMT-P preceptor when requested completing all documentation/evaluation on behalf of students.
        • Accommodates MGMC approved third riders for orientation and/or educational purposes.
        • Responds to mass casualty or other emergency incidents providing triage, medical care and coordination in conjunction with incident command, responding services, and Story County Emergency Management.
        • Participates in emergency preparedness planning and drills to facilitate MGMC, MICS and community preparedness and after action plan development and implementation.
        • Responds to and assists with hospital emergencies, all MGMC emergency code responses, security incidents or requests, and other situations as needed including IV requests.
        • Assists with patient care in Emergency Department.
        • Performs daily security and parking rounding and inspections.
        • Responds to and manages security requests, incidents, and investigations utilizing professional judgment to involve/inform appropriate resources such as House Manager, Supervisor, Director and/or Emergency Management Security Coordinator, Administration, law enforcement.
        • Documents all security activities according to policy and procedures.
        • Reports security risk situations to House Manager, Supervisor, Director and/or Emergency Management Security Coordinator as soon as possible for awareness and/or for needed action steps, support or follow up.
        • Refers security risk investigations to Emergency Management/Security Coordinator or Director for follow up and coordination.
        • Performs all other hospital security functions as defined by security policies, procedures, and emergency code responses.
        • Participates and cooperates in MICS quality assurance activities/audits and quality improvement activities.
        • Directs/coordinates and assists with pre-hospital and community education programs.
        • Participates in community and professional activities.
        • Directs/coordinates and provides basic and advanced emergency care services for community event functions as assigned.
        • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
      • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
        • Valid Paramedic certification for Iowa.
        • National Paramedic Certification through NREMT if licensed after 2006.
        • Valid Iowa Chauffeur license and eligibility for coverage under Mary Greeley Medical Center’s insurance and maintained throughout employment.
        • Graduation from a paramedic program with BETS approved skills.
        • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment
        • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) verification, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment
        • Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS) verification, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment
        • Hazardous Materials Operations training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
        • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
      • Organizational Requirements:
        • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

        • Critical Care Paramedic
        • EMS Instructor
        • Pre-hospital Trauma life Support (PHTLS).

        Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
        • Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.
        • Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra, statistics, and their applications.
        • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
        • Active Listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times

        • One year paramedic experience with 911 ambulance service
        • One year experience with hospital based ambulance service.
