Additionally, Parole Officer typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Parole Officer gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     Summary

    The mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect a community experience, foster corrections and restore victims of crime. Probation and Parole Officer, Seniors employ a balance of principles related to counseling, case management, and law enforcement to ensure the safety of our communities and individuals who are under the supervision of adult felony probation or parole. Trained in the principles of evidence-based practices, Probation and Parole Officers build rapport with clients and utilize community resources to assist clients in moving toward long-term behavioral change.

    Responsibilities

    • Counsel clients in dealing with a variety of problems including drug and alcohol abuse, financial, marriage, employment, education, and legal problems.
    • Design and implement case plans for clients and monitor progress.
    • Facilitate and co-facilitate groups in areas such as employment, drug abuse, relationships and finances.
    • Write violation, post-sentencing, pre-sentence investigation and court reports, and modification orders.
    • Investigate behaviors, law violations, transfers, employment status, and residence of clients.
    • Arrest probationers or parolees, conduct searches of persons and property, and secure evidence.
    • Make home visits and employment and community contacts with treatment providers and members of the criminal justice system.

    Minimum Qualifications: 

    • Some knowledge of the fundamentals of behavioral science. Typically gained by completion of at least 12 credit hours of college-level coursework in behavioral or social sciences i.e., psychology, social work, and/or criminal justice OR completion of an internship (at least 150 hours) related to this field OR at least 1 year of full-time experience involving daily interaction with clients and/or offenders to address behaviors, i.e. experience as a Law Enforcement Officer, Correctional Officer, criminal justice or mental health professional involving interaction with clients or offenders to address human behaviors (Office/administrative support work is non-qualifying).
    • Some knowledge of criminal justice. Typically gained from the completion of at least six credit hours or 36 hours of training regarding criminal justice or a closely related field or at least six months of full-time experience working in the criminal justice system administering policies and procedures that relate to client management or legal processes of the criminal justice system. (Office/administrative support work is typically non-qualifying)
    • Some knowledge of identifying social or human science resources to fit the needs of clients.
    • Some knowledge of computer operations to include entering, retrieving and storing data. Typically gained from at least one year experience using a personal computer or have completed a computer related training course that covered both basic and intermediate computer skills.
    • Experience writing detailed reports. Typically gained from completing at least two college level courses specific to report writing which required the applicant to write detailed reports OR completed an internship (at least 150 hours) related to this task or at least six months of full-time experience in social services, law enforcement, or business setting preparing written reports.
    • Some knowledge of managing a caseload with conflicting priorities. Typically gained from at least 6 months of full-time work experience identifying project needs, prioritizing tasks, identifying resources to use, developing strategies, and implementing goals or the completion of an internship (at least 150 hours or 3 credits) in a social service or law enforcement setting AND at least 6 months of work experience identifying project needs, prioritizing tasks, identifying resources to use, developing strategies, and implementing goals.
    • Willingness to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds and anti-social behaviors; review graphic materials, ability to remain objective when dealing with individuals under the supervision of Probation or Parole.
    • Meet the entrance requirements established by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy for Correctional Officers - IDAPA 11.11.01 pages 8-11.
