Job Summary
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) position will perform on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and are responsible for job site coordination, dispatcher/train communication and various types of On-Track Safety in controlled and non-controlled track areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Provide the required jobsite protection on each assignment, error free and consistent with the rules; including but not limited to radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, granting permission for trains and on-track equipment to proceed through limits
- Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad
- Prepare and submit required electronic forms including but not limited to: a job set-up form for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other reports as required
- Handle and place signs, derail and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day
- Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training
- Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding the various assignments and schedules
- Other duties assigned or required to meet the business needs
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:- Able to complete required physical demands and/or tasks
- Able to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains
- Understand the On-Track Safety training and qualification required of the roadway workers to be protected
- Proficient in the radio procedure for communicating between RWIC/EIC’s (Employee in Charge) and assigned work group
- Able to stand for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours or more
- Proficient in performing a job briefing with all the roadway workers within their work location.
- Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
- Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device
- Proficiency with electronic communications including e-mail and text as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite)
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A minimum of 2 years of Class 1 Railroad experience; preferably within the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department
- 2 - 5 years of railroad track maintenance experience
- Prior experience working within a railway company
- Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent
