Being a Patent Agent must be registered to practice with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. May require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Additionally, Patent Agent typically reports to a supervisor or manager. To be a Patent Agent typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience. Role Responsibilities
- Drafting, preparing and prosecuting U.S. patent applications.
- Working to resolve any questions or objections of USPTO patent examiners regarding applications.
- Identifying primary incentive concepts from discussions with inventors.
- Assisting internal R&D departments in patent matters, including monitoring activities of competitors.
- Ensuring any new technical development is free from third parties’ rights.
- Research and determine proper USPTO procedures for addressing prosecution matters.
- 4-year degree in a hard science, including physics, chemistry, computer science or mathematics or in an engineering discipline, including electrical or computer
- Graduate degree preferred
- Technical experience in at least one of:
- Hardware engineering of optics, fiber optics, laser diodes, electronics; and
- Data science and analysis, such as statistical modeling, simulation, mathematical morphology in image and data analysis, and related software architecture
- Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) preferred
- Strong and demonstrated technical writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to learn new subject matter in a self-directed manner
