Patient Safety Manager manages a staff responsible for developing and implementing patient safety programs. Supervises the investigation of errors and then plans for resolution of all safety related incidents, including those involving employees, visitors, patients, and situations posing a threat to the hospital's buildings and equipment. Being a Patient Safety Manager maintains records of patient-related errors and evaluates this information in order to identify the cause of the error. Collects, reviews, and analyzes information from the facility's safety programs to identify corrective action and programs as necessary. Additionally, Patient Safety Manager recommends changes, policies, or programs that could prevent future errors. Designs and presents training programs meant to increase awareness of patient safety initiatives. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Patient Safety Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes.     This role reports to the AVP Clinical Services and is responsible for clinical quality and risk management activities which include identifying, examining, and responding to quality/risk-related issues, requests for discovery, and complaints; managing quality- and risk-related investigations to promote safe patient care and, staff safety. Collaborating on complaints/concerns identified through Hotline reports, Guest Relations and/or Legal that have clinical quality and risk management implications; monitoring organizational event reporting with primary focus on incidents involving harm or potential liability and identify opportunities for improvement; managing and analyzing risk management information; proposing, recommending and implementing solutions and resolutions to quality and risk-related issues and events; following up on the implementation and impact of proposed solutions and resolutions; having a general knowledge of organizational insurance programs and resources and managing claims against the organization; interfacing with legal defense counsel and claims teams. Participate in multidisciplinary teams, standing work groups, councils, and committees to evaluate and improve organizational risk including quality patient care.

    The Manager, Quality & Patient Safety - provides or assists in quality and risk management training/educational programs; identifies experts and topics that promote management of clinical quality outcomes; complies with quality and risk management standards for purposes of accreditation and regulatory compliance with the objective of promoting and enhancing patient and employee safety, quality care, and minimizing losses to protect the assets of the organization.

    Essential Functions:

    • Investigate medical complaints and medico-legal cases: perform root cause analysis and assess need for focused review by Subject Matter Experts. Act as liaison with legal department regarding guest and crew claims. Provide responses to the guest/crew departments within the defined time limits. Works with SME’s to recommend corrective actions.
    • Manage and investigate patient safety events. Perform investigation and root cause analysis, develop corrective and preventative plans, and monitor risk plans.
    • Work with the health services team to review clinical cases identified through audit activities and escalate as necessary to appropriate stakeholders within Health Services.
    • Collate, analyze, and report risk management incident / complaint data and trends.
    • Facilitate risk assessments to proactively identify and evaluate areas of risk.
    • Collaborate with the Health Policy team to review and update medical policies and procedures related to quality and risk management
    • Develop and deliver training materials to shipboard and shoreside staff as part of the continuous quality improvement initiative.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in risk management, legal, nursing, or other related healthcare field.
    • RN, BSN preferred.
    • CPHRM, CPPS, CPHQ or other healthcare related quality and risk designations preferred. (or must obtain within 1 year of hire date)
    • Certified Legal Nurse Consultant (CLNC) preferred.
    • 4 years of healthcare quality, risk management, and legal/medical claims experience required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Expert-level writing skills. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload and complete projects promptly. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams. Strong clinical logic capable of researching current evidence-based guidelines and their application to cruise ship maritime medicine.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Power Platforms

    Physical Demands: Requires regular movement throughout CCL facilities.

    Travel: Less than 25% shipboard travel likely

    Work Conditions: Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.

    The range for this role’s base salary is $95,000 - $115,000. Offers to selected candidates will be made on a fair and equitable basis, taking into account specific job-related skills and experience.
