Pharmacy Director directs, establishes, and plans the overall policies and goals for a hospital or healthcare facility's pharmacy services. Maintains contact with other department heads, medical staff, and nursing staff to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes, and promote effective drug therapy. Being a Pharmacy Director requires a bachelor's degree in pharmacy. Typically requires Registered Pharmacist (RPh). Additionally, Pharmacy Director typically reports to a top management. The Pharmacy Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Pharmacy Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Days

    Plan, lead and direct functions of pharmacy department core service areas to include: Utilization of technology to develop safe and effective medication distribution systems, Oversight of inventory and formulary selection, to include proper ordering, receiving, and invoice handling of multi-million dollar inventory. Develop budgetary plan for utilization of people and supplies to provide safe pharmacy services, including plans to handle drug shortages. Develop and measure effective clinical programs that support safe care of patients including dose monitoring services, providing feedback to providers, as well as dosing services based on Medical Staff approved protocols as in anticoagulation. Develop programs and opportunities to enhance use of 340B designation, working with leadership team. Participate in leadership development activities and prepare and continually revise disaster readiness resources, participating in drills. Other assignments as necessary.

    Responsibilities

    Managerial Responsibilities

    • Coordinates and participates in the development and maintenance of up to date policies, procedures, and training materials for processes used in preparation and dispensing drug products
    • Coordinates and participates in the training, scheduling, and supervision of technicians and pharmacists to support safe patient care
    • Oversees daily Pharmacy operations and troubleshoots as needed
    • Performs the human resources functions of hiring, discipline, evaluations, rounding, & staff development
    • Reviews work processes and participates in efforts to improve quality of service and reduce costs
    • Assures compliance with DNV, 340B Regulations, Iowa Board of Pharmacy, and other accrediting/regulatory agencies.
    • Manages staff assignments, making sure the right people are in the right places to assure projects get done and staff is put in situations where they can succeed.
    • Coordinates/Supervises utilization of information systems, automated dispensing machines, and other technology to meet the service needs of the Pharmacy Department
    • Maintains inventory in an efficient and cost-effective manner at both campuses
    • Participates in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, particularly as they relate to medications and medication use.
    • Balances team and individual responsibilities; is open and objective to other’s views; gives and welcomes feedback; contributes to positive team goals; and puts the success of the team above own interests.
    • Manage 340B program overall including Infusion Center, main Pharmacy and contract Pharmacy partners.

    Liaison and Representative for Other Hospital and UPH Areas and the Medical Staff:

    • Responsible for St Luke’s PTN and Represents Sioux City in System P&T
    • Representation on the UPH Pharmacy CSG
    • Advocates for, and represents Pharmacy staff at all hospital meetings, Safety huddles, Budget meetings, Operations, and other meetings as needed.
    • Oversee 340B oversight and antimicrobial stewardship committees.

    Basic UPH Performance Criteria

    • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
    • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
    • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
    • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
    • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
    • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

    Education:

    • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or BS Pharmacy with equivalent clinical or management experience and/or advanced degree.

    Experience:

    • Minimum of 5 years hospital experience required.
    • Must be able to read/write English proficiently.

    Ability to work with computer systems.

    • Pharmacy supervisory or managerial experience preferred.

    License(s)/Certification(s):

    • Iowa Pharmacist license in good standing/or licensure eligible
    • Must maintain current license to practice in Iowa and be in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners.
    • Must serve as Pharmacist in Charge for Hospital and be in good standing to obtain required IA BOP Licenses as well as DEA license and IA Controlled Substance License.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Must have sound clinical pharmaceutical care skills.
    • Must have demonstrated leadership qualities, problem solving skills and the ability to instruct and lead staff.
    • Must demonstrate discretion and sound judgment in all job responsibilities while remaining fair and impartial.
    • Must be able to communicate effective verbally and in writing.
    • Must be able to function effectively in a fast paced environment.
    • Must be able to ascertain research and understand Pharmacy related problems and provide realistic actionable solutions.
    • Must have the ability to maintain a constant pleasant attitude toward patients, visitors and fellow employees.
    • Must be able to see the big picture and discern the role and objective of Pharmacy within that scope.
