Pharmacy Director directs, establishes, and plans the overall policies and goals for a hospital or healthcare facility's pharmacy services. Maintains contact with other department heads, medical staff, and nursing staff to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes, and promote effective drug therapy. Being a Pharmacy Director requires a bachelor's degree in pharmacy. Typically requires Registered Pharmacist (RPh). Additionally, Pharmacy Director typically reports to a top management. The Pharmacy Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Pharmacy Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Clinical Practice Model Management       In collaboration with the director oversee the professional practice of clinical services to ensure optimal, safe, effective patient care and ensure compliance with professional standards.
               Develops position requests, justifications, and leads recruitment and hiring.
               Stays abreast of best practices and evaluates them for implementation into clinical care.
               Reviews and revises position descriptions and competencies as needed to maintain proper scope and relevant competencies for CPS. Oversees the maintenance and storage of all clinical PD’s and competencies.
               Works collaboratively with Clinical Pharmacy Director and strategically with Division Heads/chairs to determine new position priorities and communicate clinical pharmacy scope and role.
               Establish quality benchmarks and ensure that operational practices are improved through the development, implementation, and evaluation of continuous quality improvement initiatives.
               Identify opportunities to utilize data about performance measures and patient outcomes in conjunction with the director and the leadership team on target areas for priority attention.
               Works collaboratively with Clinical Managers to monitor, analyze, and adjust workload metrics and staffing as indicated.
               Leads the development and administration of policies and procedures. Ensures internal processes comply with institutional guidelines and regulatory agencies to maintain the integrity of the department and institution. 
               Oversees clinical pharmacy privileging (DTM) administrative processes to ensure compliance with policy and regulatory agencies.
               Works in partnership with other departments to address and help resolve any system related issues to include Beacon, Epic, etc. formulating and executing plan through collaboration with clinical pharmacy specialists.
               Evaluates and makes recommendation for approval/denial of potential Conflict of Interest activity requests.

     

    Strategic and Financial Oversight             Works collaboratively with Director Clinical Pharmacy to establish and implement short- and long-range strategic plans and initiatives.
               Implement and evaluate strategies to ensure continuous safety and accreditation readiness.
               Develops action plans, identifies resources required for successful implementation of initiatives, and monitor progress and results to ensure goals attainment.
               Assists in formulating the budget and ensure department operates within budget and in accordance with performance standards. Manages physical resources including space planning, inventory control and property maintenance. 
               Manages Clinical Pharmacy Meeting requests and budget, approving travel, and funding.
               Works collaboratively, participates in, and evaluates cost of care initiatives, implementing appropriate new processes.

     

    Human Resources   Responsible for recruitment, coaching, mentoring, performance management, and professional development of clinical managers.
               Guides managers on personnel issues.
               Educates new clinical managers on attendance, performance, FPPE/OPPE, and other operating procedures to ensure compliance with institutional guidelines and policies.
               Assist Director Clinical Pharmacy in managing additional pay plans, including updating/revising, development of new plans, data collection and communication with compensation. (RPD, Certification Pay, PDM,etc).
               Participates in appropriate leadership on-call for pharmacy.
               Competes leading teams training. Continues leadership development through the leadership institute or other offerings.
               Participates and leads programs, initiatives, and committees across the organization (PDM, P&T, Beacon, Space, etc)

    REQUIREMENTS

     

    Education: Pharm.D. from an accredited school of pharmacy. 

     Certification: 

    All of the following:

    Texas State Board of Pharmacy Pharmacist license within 90 days of job entry.

    Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.

     Preferred Certification: Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Certification

     Experience: 

    Five years of  pharmacy supervisory or management experience.

    Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.
