    Main Purpose of Job

    As the Serving Deputy to the Superintendent of the Natural Resources Police, you will support the overall mission of protecting and preserving natural resources and enforcing criminal laws within your jurisdiction. You will work closely with the Superintendent to ensure the effective management and enforcement of all laws and regulations related to criminal, environmental conservation, wildlife protection, and resource management.

    Your responsibilities will be diverse and challenging, requiring a combination of leadership, strategic thinking, and operational expertise. You will assist the Superintendent in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and programs to safeguard natural resources, prevent environmental crimes, and promote sustainable practices.

    In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Natural Resources Police, including coordinating patrols, investigations, and enforcement actions. You will also collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, government agencies, and community stakeholders to address complex environmental issues and promote public awareness and engagement.

    Additionally, as the Serving Deputy, you will be expected to lead by example, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct. You will mentor and support staff members, foster a culture of teamwork and accountability, and ensure that resources are utilized efficiently and effectively to achieve the department's goals.

    POSITION DUTIES

    We seek a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our team as an Executive Management member in law enforcement. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, visionary leader, and effective communicator with a proven track record of managing and overseeing law enforcement operations at an executive level.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and procedures to ensure effective law enforcement operations;
    • Provide leadership and guidance to department heads and staff members to achieve organizational goals and objectives;
    • Oversee the allocation of resources, budget management, and financial planning to support law enforcement activities;
    • Collaborate with external stakeholders, government agencies, and community organizations to enhance public safety initiatives;
    • Monitor and evaluate department performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions as needed;
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and standards within the law enforcement agency;
    • Represent the agency at public events, meetings, and hearings to communicate critical messages and foster positive community relations;
    • Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in law enforcement to drive innovation and continuous improvement;
    • Handle sensitive and critical situations with professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality; and
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Public Administration, or related field of study

    Experience: Ten (10) years of professional experience in law enforcement, with a minimum of five (5) years of said experience being at the rank of Captain or equivalent.

    Selective Qualifications

    To qualify, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications and selective qualifications.

    Candidates must have a valid driver's license, with a good driving record. Driving record will be verified to confirm eligibility for hire, during the background check process.

    Desired Or Preferred Qualifications

    • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to effectively lead and motivate a diverse team of law enforcement personnel.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse stakeholders, including other law enforcement agencies, government officials and the public.
    • Sound judgement and decision-making abilities in high pressure situations.
    • Ability to develop and implement law enforcement policies and procedures.
    • Proficiency in using technology and law enforcement databases.
    • Thorough knowledge of Maryland state laws, regulations and procedures related to law enforcement and natural resources protection.
    • Understanding of conservation and environmental issues relevant to natural resources policing.
    • Familiarity with budgeting, resource allocation and strategic planning processes.

    LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

    • This position is only open to those who have successfully graduated from a recognized police training academy or equivalent law enforcement training. Proof of said education/training is required.
    • Only candidates that successfully complete a background check will be eligible for hire

    Special Requirements

    • Must meet the physical fitness standards required for law enforcement officers, including passing a physical fitness test
    • Ability to work in various outdoor environments and adverse weather conditions
    • Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
