Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Police Lieutenant typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments. Lieutenant Job Description
The Lieutenant on the Watch team is a front line working supervisor who performs professional supervisory work by administering, managing, operating and controlling security activities of the Western Tidewater Regional Jail in compliance with Virginia law, jail standards, professional correctional practices and American Correctional Association Standards for Adult Local Detention Facilities. Work includes planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the care, custody and safekeeping of all inmates.
Applicants must hold a current DCJS Jailor’s Certification and have considerable experience supervising subordinate staff in a jail/corrections environment.- Performs a variety of law enforcement duties in accordance with established procedures ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a regional jail.
- Maintains custody, control, and security of inmates within the facility.
- Performs regular rounds and security checks to inspect housing units and other sections of the facility to ensure safety and security.
- Supervises jail officers in the performance of duties in daily operations while focusing on staff and inmate safety and security.
- Accurately prepares shift briefings, assignments, and work schedules.
- Evaluates the performance of subordinate staff and implements training/improvement plans and recommends disciplinary action when necessary in accordance with established policy.
- Regularly provides guidance and training for new and existing staff.
- Prepares accurate and effective written reports, computerized logs, and regularly communicates with subordinates, colleagues, and leadership.
- Responds and provides professional guidance during emergency situations.
- Must be able to walk extensively, run occasionally, and climb stairs.
- Must be willing and able to work 12 hour rotating shifts, day or night. Lieutenants are essential personnel subject to recall at any time and are required to report during emergencies and/or inclement weather events.
- Must be a DCJS Certified Jailor and have considerable supervisory experience in the corrections industry.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical, and drug screen.
- Must have demonstrated experience in staff supervision, training, and following established policies and procedures.
- Competitive salary based on experience from $60,000 - $72,000
