Police Sergeant jobs in Louisiana
Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. 318-274-3829 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience in law enforcement work.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of appointment.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.
For some positions, evidence of POST certification must be submitted at the time of the application.
May be required to qualify annually with a firearm.
For some positions, applicant must be eligible for bond.
NOTE:
All classified jobs in State service with police officer and wildlife enforcement titles qualify as law enforcement.
Jobs outside State service that will qualify as law enforcement are those performed while commissioned with the power of arrest.
Military police in the armed services are law enforcement; security/guard duty is NOT qualifying.
NOTE:
Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.FUNCTION OF WORK:
To oversee a full range of police services on an assigned shift with primary emphasis on the enforcement of laws, investigation of crimes and accidents, and providing emergency services and crime prevention programs.
LEVEL OF WORK:
Supervisor.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General from a higher-level police official. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct over Police Officers 1, 2 and 3.
LOCATION OF WORK:
Statewide.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from Police Officer 3 by the presence of direct supervisory responsibilities.

Keeps firearms, armory, and other equipment.
