As a trainee the candidate will learn the role of the Shift Supervisor who: is responsible for supervising & training their direct reports is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Ravenswood keeps plant management/external parties aware of changes in plant status or capabilities. is the lead employee responsible for overseeing all generating units. is the authority for Lock Out Tag Out and Work Permits. is the lead for emergency response (medical, environmental, equipment etc.) attends meetings with other members of management and supports common initiatives. is a key participant in the decision-making process at Ravenswood. As the point person for the entire station this position becomes fast paced and stressful at times. A person who can ignore distractions, prioritize and multi-task while remaining calm during times of emergencies is most likely to succeed. As a Shift Supervisor trainee, the employee will shadow the qualified Shift Supervisors and rotate through the different watch teams learning from them all. The trainee will learn the functions, become acclimated to the responsibilities and pace of the role while gaining experience. In addition, the trainee can expect to be rotated off shift to become familiar with the roles of the various support groups (maintenance, performance, engineering etc.). The trainee is expected to begin studying and apply for the NYC high pressure boiler operators license as soon as being selected for this job. Once qualified the trainee can expect to be promoted to Shift Supervisor and be assigned to a watch of their own. Job Functions Obtains all necessary credentials within training period (training period is the time it takes to obtain a High Pressure Boiler Operators License). Participate in various meetings to discuss station and O&M activities Maintains assigned working locations in a neat and orderly condition. Completes other tasks as requested by the Operations Manager Trains to: Direct the operation of the plant during normal, abnormal and emergency conditions Maintain safety and environmental compliance Continuously monitor system and component conditions to determine plant and equipment performance. Actively take the lead in conducting acceptance and performance tests on existing or new plant equipment. Lead emergency activities to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment as required. Plan and lead the performance of basic mechanical maintenance duties such as predictive and preventative maintenance, replacing basic parts (filters, gaskets, etc.), adjusting valve packing, changing oil and other minor maintenance tasks. Supervise high voltage switching up to 345Kv Provide direction and oversight to temporarily assigned personnel (including subcontractor personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations and maintenance). Conduct basic trouble shooting and analysis on indication and control equipment. Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventative/predictive maintenance records. Interact with various regulatory agencies including accommodating surprise inspections Education and Experience – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Minimum of 5 years power plant experience; 2 years of control room operations preferred Must have the qualifications to be eligible to apply for the NYC High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineers license. Qualifications for that license are found at : https://www1.nyc.gov/site/buildings/industry/obtain-a-high-pressure-boiler-operating-engineer-license.page Not necessary but preferred to have FDNY COFs, A-35, F-01, G-46, G-98, S-12, S-13, S-95 C-91, G-29, G-44, G-79, P-13, P-23, S-15. (will obtain all during training period) Not necessary but preferred to have competed FEMA ICS 100,200,700 & 800, HAZWOPER 24 & OSHA 10 hour (will obtain all during training period) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position. Must have working knowledge of simple cycle (brayton cycle) gas turbines, Rankine Cycle steam plants and combined cycle plants. Must have the desire to supervise a team and treat all members with respect, dignity and fairness. Must have the ability to read mechanical and electrical prints Must have the ability to work with various computer applications (MS Office, Paycom, Nite Owl, Stack Vision, Pi, Ovation, Maximo etc.) Must have the ability to work with hand, electric and precision tools Must have the ability to conduct troubleshooting experience Must have a desire to take on additional responsibilities such as interacting with all levels of management, energy marketers, Con Ed system operations, the FDNY, DEC, DEP, USCG and the NYISO Must be able to prioritize tasks while working under a deadline. Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job. Position can be fast paced with many decisions to be made with limited time to make them. Requires working both in an office setting and in the field in all weather conditions and common power plant conditions (heat/noise) at all times of day and night. Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required. Requires working rotating 12 hour shifts with weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. Includes attending meetings and speaking professionally in a group setting.
