The Printing Press Operator reviews job specifications and complete setup tasks, including filling ink, calibrating machine, and loading stock. Completes print production jobs on various types of printing press machines, including digital, flexographic, web, screen, or others. Being a Printing Press Operator performs in-process quality inspections utilizing standard testing protocols. Conducts visual inspection of samples prior to running job. In addition, Printing Press Operator completes all required production logs and documentation. Interprets equipment diagnostics, troubleshoots breakdowns, and makes necessary adjustments to complete the job. Performs regular maintenance, cleaning, and changeovers of press from one job to another. Maintains a clean and safe workspace. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. Being a Printing Press Operator independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors. The purpose of this position is to make ready plates to produce the daily papers, preprints, and commercial jobs according to specifications and deadlines. Incumbent will also maintain plate-room equipment and monitor the CTP Machines and NewsWay Pagination program, ensuring systems operate at peak efficiency. Incumbent will also work as a helper in the pressroom and in the mailroom as needed.
Primary Responsibilities- Monitor CTP machines and NewsWay Pagination program 40%
- and plate bender keeping plates loaded during the production process to insure on time press starts.
- Check plates for issues and bend plates allowing for on time press starts.
- Keep record of last file sent and last plate out on the dailies.
- Track number of plates used for each job so accounting can accurately allocate usage amounts.
- Perform maintenance on CTP machines that includes routine monthly, cleaning, greasing, overall health check & report issues to the supervisor.
- Help in the Pressroom/Mailroom/Bindery as the need arises.
- Practice safe working habits - keeping work area clean at all times. - At All Times
