Professor - Economics teaches courses in the discipline area of economics. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Economics provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Economics typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.   • Thayer Academy’s Upper School seeks a student-focused collaborator to teach AP Economics – Micro and Macro – in its Upper School History Department for the 2024-2025 academic year (mid August to mid June) This full-time position includes instructing four classes, advising a small group of students, and participating in the life of the school with students through coaching and/or supervising student activities. This position is a salaried, exempt, full-time,10-month position. Upper School teachers report to the Upper School Director.

    Roles And Responsibilities

    • Teach two sections of AP Economics and two sections of history, ranging from World History (we offer a two-year World History curriculum), US History, and possible senior semester-based electives.
    • Advise a group of 8-10 students.
    • Apply practices in the classroom and other settings that foster equity, inclusion, and belonging among Thayer Academy community members.
    • Serve as an athletic coach for one or more seasons (preferred).
    • Participate in ongoing professional development and engage in growth opportunities.

    Qualifications

    • A bachelor’s degree required, Masters (or higher) preferred in Economics, History, or Education or related field
    • 3-5 years of teaching experience at the high school level preferred
    • Experience with and ability to motivate adolescent students to engage in AP economics and desire to build academic relationships
    • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in the classroom, in curriculum, and in relationships with members of the school community
    • High level of comfort and experience with technology in an educational setting
    • Willingness to work on a team in a collaborative department
    • Ability to communicate and listen effectively with students and families
    • Commitment to building a reflective teaching practice and an innovative approach to classroom pedagogy
    • Interest in engaging in ongoing dialogue with division leadership, department head, and colleagues about best teaching and learning practices
    • Ability to communicate effectively with students, their families, and colleagues
