Professor - Music teaches courses in the discipline area of music. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensures student engagement. Being a Professor - Music provides tutoring and academic counseling to students, maintains classes related records, and assesses student coursework. Collaborates and supports colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities. Additionally, Professor - Music typically reports to a department head. Requires a PhD or terminal degree appropriate to the field. Has considerable experience and is qualified to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels and initiates research and case studies in field of interest and may publish findings in trade journals or textbooks. Provides intellectual leadership and has made significant contributions to the field. May offer independent study opportunities and mentoring to students.     Job Summary

    The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the director of Marching and Symphonic Bands, and to provide direction or oversight for all of the instrumental ensembles. The successful candidate would also serve the department through teaching in the School of Music, specifically courses related to instrumental music education.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions:

    • Direct all aspects of Marching Band
    • Direct all aspects of Symphonic Band
    • Teach coursework as needed in the Music Education curriculum and as needed in the School of Music
    • Provide oversight for all instrumental ensembles, including, but not limited to Jazz Band, Pep Band, and Chamber Ensembles
    • Provide oversight for all instrumental adjunct faculty
    • Recruit music majors and non-major ensemble participants
    • Advise students in the Music Education degree program
    • Manage the Marching Band budget
    • Coordinate band involvement at athletic events with the Athletic Director
    • Provide service to the university through participation in committees
    • Participation in local, regional, and national professional organizations is expected

    Required Qualifications

    • An understanding of the importance for diversity, inclusion and equity.
    • Master’s degree in music
    • Minimum of three years experience teaching music at the high school or collegiate level
    • Ability to prioritize multiple demands in a fast-paced work environment

    • Demonstrable success teaching in higher education
    • Demonstrable success in recruitment of student musicians
    • Professional performance experience
    • DCI Experience

    Supervision Received

    • Receives supervision and work assignments from the Chair of the School of Music

    Supervision Exercised

    • Responsible for the coordination of work assignments for band assistants and student employees
    • Responsible for communication and coordination of instrumental adjunct instructors in cooperation with the Chair of the School of Music
