    Duties and Responsibilities:
    The successful applicant will teach lower- and upper-level undergraduate courses (typically nine credits or 3 courses per term); courses might include astronomy and physics lectures and/or laboratories. The successful applicant will engage in astronomy /science-education research and participate in community and University-wide service. The applicant will play an active role in the department's student enrollment and retention efforts, notably through the upcoming development of an engineering emphasis track for the BA in physics program.  
    The successful applicant will be eligible to apply for preferential observing time with Maunakea Observatories (MKO). Our location near the ?Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai?i and seven MKO headquarters provides opportunities for close scientific and educational collaborations with scientists. The Department has a suite of small-aperture telescopes regularly used for lower- and upper-division laboratory courses and is currently developing a professional 0.7-m observatory with imaging and spectroscopic capabilities for its undergraduate programs and community engagements.

    Minimum qualifications:
    1.    Doctoral-level degree at the time of appointment from an accredited university in astronomy, physics, or closely related field.
    2.    Current publication record in astronomy, physics, or science-education related research.
    3.    Teaching experience in astronomy and/or physics at the college level.

    Desirable qualifications:
    1.    Current evidence of ability to perform independent research in astronomy involving undergraduate students.
    2.    Demonstrated experience with community outreach activities, especially with underrepresented minorities.
    3.    Experience in training future workforce, relevant to the context of our unique proximity to MKO, our diverse student population, and the mission of the Department of Physics & Astronomy at UH Hilo.
    4.    Experience working in a multi-cultural environment with a diverse student, university, and community population, and a familiarity with the history and current events of astronomy in Hawai?i.
    5.    Experience in developing astronomical instrumentation and/or with the operations of professional observatories.
    6.    Success in securing extramural grants.

    Pay range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
