    Job Description:
    The Division of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaii-West O’ahu (UHWO) invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor position in Sociology to begin on August 1, 2025. We seek a dynamic and dedicated individual who is passionate about teaching, research, and contributing to the academic community. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach a variety of lower and upper-level Sociology courses and the Senior Capstone, as well as Social Science foundation courses, contingent to the needs of the concentration of Sociology and the Division of Social Sciences, respectively.
     
    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Specializing in serving a large native Hawaiian population, effective teaching is the primary mission of this position and the UHWO. Preference will be given to applicants prepared to teach Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory, Philosophy of Social Sciences and at least three of the following: Medical Sociology, Community Health and Well-Being, Sociology of Aging, Sociology of Sexuality, Sociology of the Body, Death, Dying and Bereavement, Applied Sociology: CBPR in Health, and Deviant Behavior. The regular teaching load is three courses per semester, and the successful candidate will primarily deliver traditional in-person courses at UHWO campus. The successful candidate is also expected to conduct pure or applied research (preferably in the field of Health and Well-Being), and participate in student academic advising, faculty governance, and institutional service. The position carries a competitive salary and travel funds for professional conferences.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    1. Ph.D. in Sociology from an accredited university (ABD candidates are eligible to apply but must complete all degree requirements prior to the appointment).
    2. Excellence in teaching as demonstrated by student evaluations and/or administrative reviews.
    3. Active scholarly research agenda demonstrated by peer-reviewed publication(s) and presentations in professional conferences.
    Desired Qualifications:
    1. Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural setting; experience teaching and working with highly diverse student body.
    2. Ability to contribute to the expansion of the Sociology curriculum in the areas consistent with personal interests and program needs.
    3. Ability to manage the certificate program in Social Science Health and Medicine (SSHM) and commitment to deliver SSHM Certificate courses.
    4. Ability to teach Philosophy of Social Sciences.
    5. Demonstrated ability to deliver in-person, hybrid, and online courses.
    6. Ability to write and/or administer grants.
    7. Commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the mission and purpose of the University of Hawai‘i to position the university as a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution.
