Property Casualty Underwriting Director directs and oversees the property/casualty insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups. Ensures the quality and integrity of underwriting activities and processes. Being a Property Casualty Underwriting Director develops guidelines and procedures regarding risk exposure, application renewal, acceptance, modification, and denial. Manages staff of property/casualty underwriters at the organization. Additionally, Property Casualty Underwriting Director provides assistance to underwriters on more complex applications. Has extensive knowledge of the underwriting discipline. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires certification as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). Typically reports to top management. The Property Casualty Underwriting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Property Casualty Underwriting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. JOB DESCRIPTION: The Underwriting Director leads and directs a team of Underwriting Associates and Manager for National Accounts Property Risk Management. The Underwriting Director is accountable for business results through overall management for renewal and new business data preparation and analysis used to inform prudent underwriting decisions throughout an account life cycle from submission through policy issuance in accordance with underwriting strategies and guidelines. In conjunction with senior management, works within the highest limits of authority. The Underwriting Director also has responsibility for monitoring business process and workflow initiatives and liaising with CNA functional areas (Operations and UW Shared Services) for Risk Management and could expand to supporting other National Accounts Property departments. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines: 1. Directs the work activities and has full management responsibility for the performance and development of subordinate staff in accordance with corporate strategic direction. 2. Coaches, leads and develops Underwriting Associates and Manager and directs the development of underwriting associate training including the granting of underwriting authority. 3. Reviews and directs the application of underwriting policy, analysis to determine acceptability of risk, file documentation, calculation of pricing and preparation of quotes for risks in support of an assigned book of business. 4. Participates with senior management in the development and implementation of underwriting policy, process, workflow, and business strategy. 5. Develops and implements operating plans for enhancing the business, meeting strategic objectives and ensuring effective support of the underwriter to bind and service accounts through adherence to process and workflow. 6. Regular reporting and monitoring of key performance indicators required to ensure execution of business for NAP including but not limited to monthly reporting on account issuance, booking and workload volumes and reports progress to senior management. 7. May develop and maintain agency and/or broker relationships in support of the underwriter to ensure positive and profitable outcomes. 8. Keeps current on line of business strategy, shared & layered marketplace trends and business implications, state/territory issues, regulations and trends. 9. May be responsible for special underwriting projects as assigned. May perform additional duties as assigned. Reporting Relationship Vice President and National Risk Management Leader Skills, Knowledge & Abilities 1. Ability to effectively lead, coach and develop an underwriting associate group. 2. Excellent communication presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners. 3. Senior level technical and business management acumen, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures. 4. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and teams. 5. Ability to condense and synthesize reporting information to senior leaders. 6. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues. 7. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems. 8. Experience working in a highly collaborative environment. 9. Ability to achieve results by taking a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives. 10. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on Excel) and Adobe Professional as well as and other business-related software. Education & Experience 1.MBA or its equivalent in experience. Professional designations preferred. 2. Typically a minimum of ten years of underwriting experience with a proven track record of results and leading dynamic teams. #LI-MP1 #LI-hybrid In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $87,000 to $178,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
