Recreation Programs Coordinator – Specialized Recreation

  • The Specialized Recreation Program Coordinator position will be responsible for working with the Program Manager, peer Program Coordinator and Assistant Program Coordinator to develop, facilitate, supervise and evaluate specialized program opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the Raleigh community.  The position will directly manage ongoing programs such as Camp Friendly (specialized day camp for youth/teens with developmental disabilities), Friendly Track Out (specialized track out program for individuals with developmental disabilities in grades K-5), Quest Adult Day program (specialized program for adults with developmental disabilities), community and social programs, partnership programs, sport/fitness programs, etc.  Additionally, the position will create relationships and partnerships to offer additional program opportunities and will manage the oversite and delivery of these programs.  This position will cross-train with Inclusion Services staff to develop understanding of inclusion services and operations for individuals requesting ADA accommodations to participate in other PRCR programs.  The position will work across the PRCR department on various initiatives, events, committees, etc. as well as other workgroup initiatives.  The position will hire, supervise and evaluate interns, and multiple part time staff and volunteers.  This position will be required to obtain a Class B CDL with endorsements upon hire. The position will perform other duties of similar nature and level as assigned and is an essential position in City disaster and emergency response.
     
    The ideal candidate for this position will be highly motivated and passionate about serving individuals with all abilities within all recreational contexts.   Specifically, the candidate will have knowledge and experience of operations regarding camp/day program development and implementation.  The candidate will be aware of and/or comfortable with learning about various disability diagnoses and/or medical conditions, routine care/emergency procedures (including invasive medication administration, use of needles, implementation of sudden cardiac arrest protocols, etc.), strategies to support relevant needs within the recreation context, therapeutic recreation programming and processes, etc.  The candidate should be able to manage complex issues and demonstrate well developed decision-making skills.  Additionally, well developed professional communication skills, relationship building skills and the ability to work across various work groups and with community partners is critical.  The candidate must be assertive, have comfort and ability to manage conflict resolution, and work both in a team and individual environment to accomplish goals.

    Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services (SRIS) provides specialized recreation and leisure opportunities for individuals with disabilities in an environment that is safe, fun, allows independence, and enhances quality of life. SRIS continually strives to provide an atmosphere that fosters inclusivity, reduces barriers and encourages individuals to reach their highest potential. The traditional focus of SRIS has been to serve individuals through specialized/therapeutic programs that are designed to meet the specific needs of individuals with disabilities. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, SRIS provides inclusion support to individuals with disabilities who wish to participate in all programs, across all Divisions, offered by Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.
     
    The Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services program operates under the direction of a Recreation Program Director, with 2 workgroups that collaborate to provide programs and services.  Inclusion Services is comprised of a full time Inclusion Manager and Inclusion Coordinator and a part time Assistant Inclusion Coordinator.  Specialized Programs is comprised of a full time Program Manager, 2 full time Program Coordinators and a part time Assistant Program Coordinator.  This position will receive direct supervision from the Program Manager.
    • Program Management: Plan, develop, coordinate and implement appropriate specialized recreation programs and events for individuals with disabilities within the Raleigh community.  Facilitates programs as assigned.  Performs research, assesses community needs and evaluates program opportunities.   Coordinates with SRIS team and with PRCR programs and facilities to offer innovative and programs.  Monitor program materials and inventory, purchase equipment/supplies, respond to inquiries/concerns, etc.  Seek and develop new program partnership opportunities with community agencies and organizations.)  Drives various sized City vehicles, transporting participants.
       
    • Inclusion Management:  Will cross-train to learn and develop skills as they relate to Inclusion Services operations and practices.  Provides subject matter expertise, training and consultation to program and facility staff across PRCR and in the community as it relates to inclusion.  
       
    • Budget Management:  Assists with development of program budgets, manages assigned budget, monitors expenditures, reconcile statements, etc. within scope of position.
       
    • Staff and Volunteer Management:   Supervise volunteers, part time program staff, drivers and multiple year-round and seasonal support staff.   Manage staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures, assign and monitor work completion; coordinates within workgroup and across other workgroups.  Recruit, train and supervise volunteers.
       
    • Policy Development and Training:   Assist with researching, reviewing, recommending and implementing policies, processes and procedures.   Assist with determining departmental and workgroup training needs, developing and implementing appropriate & relevant training curriculum, etc.
       
    • Community Outreach:   Serve on various committees and/or attend meetings with various community organizations, collaborate with various agencies to educate the public and other agencies regarding SRIS programs and services; coordinate with universities, other P&R agencies and professional agencies.
    Education and Experience:
    Bachelor's degree, or higher, in Therapeutic Recreation/Recreation Therapy and a minimum of 2 years of directly related experience providing therapeutic recreation/recreation therapy delivery in a community or recreation setting.  Minimum of 1 year in a supervisory role over volunteers and/or part time/temporary staff.  
     
    Applicants may substitute additional relevant education for the required experience.
     
    License & Certifications:
    • Current CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) required or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
    • Current LRT (Licensed Recreation Therapist) required or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
    • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with ability to obtain Class B CDL preferred
    • Ability to complete CPR/First Aid/AED training
    • Ability to complete NCI or other behavior de-escalation and support training
