Recreational Therapist jobs in Missouri

Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Requires to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Recreational Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.       • Provides supportive advocacy to patients and their families as part of an interdisciplinary health care team to overcome barriers to progression-of-care and facilitate a safe and coordinated discharge to the community.
    • Job Requirements
      • Education
        • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation with emphasis in therapeutic recreation or a related field, such as Music Therapy, Art Therapy, or Creative Arts Therapy.
      • Experience
        • Previous experience in mental health or age specific population preferred
      • Skills
        • Good communication skills – Ability to communicate effectively in written format and/or oral presentations
        • Strong analytical & problem solving skills; semi-independent in decision making
        • Ability to maintain organization in a changing environment
        • Exhibit initiative, responsibility & flexibility
        • Must be able to initiate and understand research related to projects
        • Learn and appropriately utilize all required computer applications, including but not limited to E-mail, Windows-based or Microsoft programs
        • Ability to write effective documentation for processes and procedures.
        • Ability to make routine decisions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
        • Appropriate assessment skills
      • Licensure/Certification/Registration
        • Required: Must obtain BLS within 90 days of hire
        • Required: Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS) or related field such as Music Therapy (MT-BC), Art Therapy (ATR-BC), within 2 years of hire.
