Recreational Therapist plans and directs medically approved therapeutic recreational programs for patients. Organizes activities according to patients' capabilities, needs, and interests. Being a Recreational Therapist conducts programs including symptom management, basic conversation skills, community re-entry, sports, gardening, dramatics, music, social activities, and arts and crafts. Prepares reports for patients' physicians describing individual patient symptoms and reactions to therapeutic programs. Additionally, Recreational Therapist conducts activity therapy assessment of a patient's strengths and needs, and recommends therapeutic activity. Documents progress on each patient. Requires a license/certification to practice from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Recreation Therapist is responsible for planning, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating therapeutic groups for patient involvement. Documentation of patient response to therapeutic modalities is required.
Job Duties- Assessment of patients
- Planning and facilitating therapeutic groups.
- Documentation of patient response to therapeutic modalities.
- Develop, implement, and update treatment plans.
- Maintains assigned areas.
- Ensures safe use of recreation equipment and tracks inventory.
- Maintains adherence to DHEC requirements and monitoring for the swimming pool and other pertinent patient areas.
- Delivers direct patient care appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
- Recommends the purchasing of supplies.

Qualifications
Job Requirements:
Education requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field.
Work experience requirements: 1 year minimum in psychiatric setting or 2 years with special populations.
Required licenses/ certifications/courses: Certification through NCTRC or related certification/licensure organization preferred. CPR certification required. Certification in exercise a plus.
