    JOB PURPOSE:     

    Research Scientists are academic professionals whose primary responsibilities are to conduct and support research. UW Regulation 2-7 describes the activities that fall into this set of responsibilities for faculty; the same definition of research applies to Academic Professionals.

    About WYSAC: The Wyoming Survey & Analysis Center (WYSAC), a unit of the University of Wyoming, specializes in program evaluation, survey research, and scientific polling under contract to governmental and private entities in Wyoming and throughout the nation. WYSAC specializes in research related to criminal justice, substance abuse prevention, public and behavioral health, education, the environment, and public opinion. The staff consists of professionals with degrees in statistics, political science, psychology, sociology, economics, information technology, business, and other policy-relevant disciplines. WYSAC is fully funded by external grants obtained by writing proposals or securing work through other connections. Over time, the successful applicant will be expected to be involved in and eventually lead this process. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

    • Conduct research to evaluate public health and substance use prevention programs related to heart disease, diabetes, commercial tobacco use, alcohol and drug use. 
    • Job duties include some or all of the following: 
    • program evaluation
    •  technical assistance and consultation with state funding agencies and grant-funded community partners 
    • outcome assessment (designing, gathering, analyzing, preparing, and presenting data for various projects) 
    • survey questionnaire design 
    • statistical analysis 
    • report writing
    • public presentations
    • supervision of, assistance to, and cooperation with other WYSAC research staff. 
    • In addition, the successful applicant will work on grant and contract applications, provide consultation or training to the public or University community, conduct workshops, and travel to state, regional, and national conferences and to meet with clients.
    •  Responsibilities will also include literature searches to identify additional research and to assist in the preparation of conference presentations and grant proposals.

    REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

    This position is eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule. 

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Education: Master’s degree in a social science field. 
    • Experience analyzing both small and large data sets is essential, including complex survey data and health surveillance studies. 
    • Applicants must demonstrate a thorough understanding of and experience with statistical methods for data analysis, including both descriptive and inferential statistics. 
    • Applicants need to have training and experience related to running statistical tests and quantitative analysis (such as Pearson chi-square tests, regression, ANOVA) and writing relevant interpretations. 
    • Applicants must also know how to use Microsoft Office products and statistical analysis software such as SPSS syntax, SAS, Stata, Python data analysis libraries (e.g. Pandas, SciPy, NumPy, Scikit-learn), and/or R. 
    • Able to demonstrate good writing, oral communication, and organizational skills. 
    • Strong time and task management skills
    • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues.
    • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Candidates with a strong background in research design and outcome evaluation will be preferred. 
    • Experience using Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) tools
    • Top candidates would have an understanding of best practices in public health or substance use prevention programs supported by federal agencies. 
    • A graduate degree in public health (such as MPH) is highly desired, as are graduate coursework and experience in program or policy evaluation. 
    • Experience with qualitative or mixed methods.. 
    • Experience with public-friendly data visualization.. 
    • An ideal candidate will have experience working collaboratively with clients.
