Summary:
The St. Joseph Rehabilitation and Care Director of Nursing (DON) is a professional nurse who works within the state defined scope of practice and adheres to defined policies/procedures and regulatory requirements. This position reports directly to the St. Joseph Rehabilitation and Care Administrator.
The DON possesses demonstratable knowledge of the skilled nursing home environment and is responsible for providing administrative and clinical oversight for the facility. Accountable for planning, coordinating, leading, and evaluating all areas of the facility including the development and maintenance of policies and procedures. The DON lives our mission and upholds our standards of behavior and values and serves as a professional role model. The DON will also promote a cohesive structured facility that is hardwired for excellence.
The DON has sound knowledge of clinical nursing practice and is responsible for adequate staffing for the delivery of competent, compassionate, and efficient resident care. Maintains the physical environment and all supplies and equipment needed in order to promote safe quality care. Responsive to resident concerns and feedback and develops action plans for improvement if needed. Responsible for all aspects of human resources which includes recruiting, hiring, retaining, training, educating, developing, employee engagement, and succession planning.
DON competencies include effective communication and relationship management, professionalism, conflict resolution, problem solving, risk management, evidence-based practice outcomes and measurement, performance improvement goal development and metrics, personal and professional accountability, and coaching and mentoring. · Nurses are competent in the nursing process and able to prioritize, formulate, implement, evaluate, and adapt the interdisciplinary plan of care.
· Nurses can implement the medical plan of care including all aspects of medication administration and other medical interventions.
· Staff accurately document all care provided in a timely manner.
3. Demonstrates ability to appropriately modify approach and procedures to meet the needs of the Adult and Geriatric population served.

4. Director of Nursing administrative duties:
· Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the nursing department as well as its programs and activities in accordance with current regulations and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility. This includes policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day operations and care of the residents.
· Prepares for and participates in facility regulatory surveys.
· Responsible for the nursing department structure.
· Oversees and is responsible for Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement and the development of action plans to address deficiencies.
· Oversees the MDS process and updates procedures as needed.
· Works collaboratively with the Administrator and provides required reports as needed or requested.
· Works with the Administrator in preparing the nursing departments budget.
· Reviews and responds to resident/family concerns/complaints/grievances and follows the hospital reporting structure. Maintains a report log of all activity.
· Reports occupational injuries and exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals according to hospital policy and procedure.
· Responsible for the educational needs of the staff to include orientation/onboarding and ongoing competencies. Works to develop in-services and trainings that meet regulatory requirements.

Bachelors Degree preferred.
