    Department Research Support/Sponsored Programs Job Purpose

    The Director of Research and Sponsored Programs supports and stimulates academic research and scholarly activities at The University of Scranton. These activities include supporting and encouraging research and grant writing within academic affairs by supervising the grant development, review, approval, and compliance process, and supporting faculty in pursuit of approved grant opportunities.

    Essential Duties

    • Directs the activities of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs: plans, coordinates, and assesses services; manages workflow and budgets and coordinates with the Office of the Treasurer on matters related to grant accounting
    • Provide primary support for an institutional review, approval, and pre/post award compliance process for grants and sponsored programs
    • Systematically share information about potential grant opportunities to inform faculty about applicable opportunities that are consistent with university objectives and faculty or department interests
    • Identifies programmatic grant opportunities and engages faculty and administration in grant writing activities for extramural funding of institutional, multi-interdisciplinary, and international projects in a timely manner that is consistent with University objectives and faculty interests
    • Manages student research programs, including the Student Opportunities in Academic Research (SOAR) Program, Faculty Student Research Program (FSRP), student travel fund, and annual Celebration of Student Scholars
    • Assists the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs in reviewing, developing, and implementing research policies
    • Work with the Office of Institutional Reporting and Data Analytics to develop and maintain commonly needed grant information and to assist grant writers with gathering institutional data relevant to particular grant submissions
    • Serve as a liaison with external grant firms to provide assistance on grant related projects
    • Supports the administrative function of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
    • Remain aware of interests and funding needs in cooperation with faculty and administrators to identify potential grant opportunities


    Additional Skills Required

    • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience, with external grant and contract sources, grant proposal preparations processes, and federal research compliance regulations and issues
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
    • Dedication, reliability, attention to detail and the ability to function under deadline pressure
    • Demonstrated significant high-quality writing/editing ability
    • Experience in managing multiple tasks
    • Must be able to support the University’s commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture
    • Must be able to respect, support and contribute to the University’s Catholic and Jesuit mission

    • A master’s degree in a relevant field is required
