Sterile Supply Attendant sterilizes, cleans, wraps, stores and distributes supplies, instruments, and equipment used in patient care. Disinfects equipment requiring decontamination or sterilization. Being a Sterile Supply Attendant prepares supplies and equipment for use during patient procedures. Operates autoclaves and other equipment to sterilize instruments and equipment. Additionally, Sterile Supply Attendant inspects and assembles instruments, equipment, trays, and packs. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Sterile Supply Attendant possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     The Central Endoscope Reprocessing Department (CERD) manager is responsible for administrative and operational goals and objectives of CERD at University Hospital South and C&W/ Mott's Childrens Hospital Pavilion. The position/role is responsible for ensuring that endoscopes/medical devices used for procedures, treatments, etc. are managed in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards and guidelines. This includes but is not limited to: the transport, handling, decontamination, inspection, HLD, in accordance with University of Michigan Health and all applicable regulatory standards, guidelines, procedures, and policies. Serves as a member of the Infection SDS committee. Works in collaboration with All Hospital Segments, Clinic Leadership, Procedural and Operating Room Leadership, nursing/patient care leaders, support services, and staff to manage the processing and availability of endoscopes and associated devices.

    Responsibilities*

    • Responsible for all subordinate human resource management, development, training and orientation programs.
    • Responsible for dept.-wide communication.
    • Responsible for compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements
    • Ensures the work environment is conducive to a high level of productivity and safety.
    • Oversees educational programs for staff and leadership development.
    • Oversees and performs duties which promote the most effective and efficient use of resources.
    • Responsible for the development and monitoring of all process improvement and quality indicators and managing these indicators to a high performance level.
    • Manages and oversees the endoscope and medical device processing for non-OR sites, units, clinics, diagnostic areas, etc. Responsible for sound fiscal management of the unit including managing to or exceeding forecast targets.
    • Oversees capital and operational budgets (forecasts)
    • Assures unit and supervisory staffing models are reviewed and adjusted accordingly.
    • Promotes an atmosphere of cooperation with all internal and external partners to assure timely processing, disinfection and distribution of endoscopes and other medical devices.
    • Responsible for ensuring that all high-level disinfection policies/procedures are current and practiced consistently.
    • Develops standard work practices. Reviews and monitors Patient Safety Reporting Forms and other quality reports to ensure safe practices are in place and being followed.
    • Maintains and fosters compliance with productivity and first-time quality indicators and criteria.
    • Is responsible for the preparation and publishing of monthly statistical activity reports.
    • Prepares regular reports for SDS committee and other committees as needed.
    • Oversees and ensures compliance and training for the Instrument Tracking System.
    • Ensures proper collection and storage of all associated records for bacteriologic testing, cycle monitoring, and preventative maintenance.
    • Assures compliance with current regulations (Federal, State, and Local) concerning HLD processes.
    • Oversees and assures the selection of the appropriate processing method is used for each item processed.
    • Assures all storage areas and supplies are maintained in a neat, orderly, safe and clean environment.
    • Assures the environment of care is compliant with standards, clean and has required air flow and air exchanges.
    • Assigns other tasks to staff members and performs other tasks as the need dictates

    Required Qualifications*

    • Bachelor's degree in the Health Care related field, Administration, Business, Education, Sciences, or other related field. May consider equivalent work experience for the right candidate.
    • Previous management experience and/or project management skills.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of high level disinfection practices.
    • Must possess a Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, Certified Registered Central Service Technician Certification or must obtain one within-probationary period of the job.
    • 3-5 yrs. surgical instrument and supply management experience.
    • Specific knowledge in the use, care and handling of endoscopes and related equipment.
    • Competent in the use of Word, Excel and UMHS computer software applications.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, critical thinking and customer service skills.

    Desired Qualifications*

    • A Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor certification or equivalent certification.
    • Sterile Processing and Distribution Manager Certification or a Certified Healthcare Leader certification, and/or an agreement to attain this certification within one year of hire.
    • Two or more years of manager experience in Sterile Processing or High Level Disinfection with progressive improvements in staff utilization, workflow, budget management, lean training, administrative and teaching duties.
    • Operating Room/ MPU/Similar experience

    Work Schedule

    Full time, M-F, weekends as needed. Hours are typically "day shift" however, may flex based on unit needs.

    Reports to High Level Disinfection and Education Manager.
