  • Position Summary and Responsibilities

    The Salt Teaching Assistant (TA) typically specializes in at least one form of Documentary Storytelling, such as audio, film, or writing. The TA supports the instructional and curricular goals of delivering the learning outcomes in the course syllabus for the course or courses to which the TA is assigned. These support tasks range from administrative services, promotional support, tutoring and/or technically training students outside of class, providing student feedback on pieces/pitches, mentoring students through their documentary storytelling skills development, directly supporting student learning around the editing software for the track they are assigned (ProTools for Radio & Podcasting, and Adobe Premier for Short Film. The Workshop and Writing Track require no special software).     Responsibilities

      Creating copies of handouts, collecting or managing file-sharing for faculty, and uploading content to the course Canvas site when needed

      Attending class sessions at the request of faculty members and providing in-class support to students

      Mentoring current students by demonstrating/role-modeling Storytelling practice and ethics

      Monitoring and evaluating student development of technical editing skills and reporting to the instructor(s) of note and the Salt Director

      Reporting student concerns related to academic matters or at-risk students to faculty of note and, if directed, by way of MECA&D Alerts

      Supporting Guest Lectures Zoom sessions (when digital) by moderating chat questions, managing captions as needed, and recording and encoding video when appropriate

      Attending Storytelling Night and supporting as an attendant, usher, and paper/digital-program creator

      Attending Final Show and Graduation and supporting as an attendant, usher, and paper/digital program creator

      Attending Faculty Meetings when requested and providing insight into students’ experiences to support their academic growth in the cohort

      Supporting the Director’s maintenance and lending library/inventory of equipment

      Posting to Salt’s Social Media Channels (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook) regarding upcoming Salt-related events and maintaining a presence in the discipline for the program

      Substituting for the course when the instructor requests assistance and/or is absent from class

      Holding regular “office hours” to meet with students 1:1 and in small groups to assist them in meeting learning outcomes

      Developing an understanding of the syllabus and course requirements and helping students remain on track with those requirements

      Providing support to students as delegated by the instructor of note or Salt Director

      Sharing student experiences, soft evaluations, or reports related to the curriculum so that the instructor of note and Director can consider on-demand programming adjustments and long-term curricular design needs

    Qualifications

      A graduate certificate in documentary studies or equivalent experience is required.

    EXPERIENCE

      1–2 years working in journalism/documentary work required

      Expertise with documentary equipment (audio recorders, microphones, cameras, etc) required

      Experience working in a classroom/critique setting preferred

      Expertise with non-linear editing software (ProTools and/or Premier) preferred

      Google Docs expertise preferred

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES

      Ability to work with diverse groups of people

      Ability to work independently as well as contribute to team initiatives

      Strong interpersonal skills

    Compensation

    This part-time, nonexempt position is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 19, 2024 and end on Friday, December 20, 2024. Compensation is $23.00 per hour, 15 to 20 hours per week.
