Translator translates written and spoken information from one language to another. Reads, comprehends, and rewrites materials in designated languages following established linguistic rules related to word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. Being a Translator must be well versed in vocabulary dealing with specialty. Must follow ethical procedures and policies that protect the confidentiality of information. Additionally, Translator may require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Translator gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Translates informational brochures, flyers, pamphlets, or other written materials from English to another language.� Interprets and translates a variety of information, such as medical or financial information, for clients and agency staff. Communicates services provided by agency to non-English speaking members of the community either in person or via telephone.��Bilingual skills are required for this position.� Applicants must be able to speak, read and write proficiently in both Spanish and English.

    Main Purpose of Job

    An Interviewer/Translator is the full performance level of work interpreting between spoken English and another language in both consecutive and simultaneous modes in a variety of settings in local health departments or State facilities. Employees in this classification interview clients in need of State services and produce translations between English and another language in a variety of forms, documents, reports, and correspondence. Employees in this classification interpret and translate with a high degree of accuracy as these interactions could cause misinterpretations or mistranslations with adverse consequences. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. Employees in this classification receive general supervision from a health professional, administrator or program-level manager. The work may require that employees travel off-site to provide translation services, such as community fairs or home visitations.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:�� Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience: Six months of experience providing formal interpretation and translation services between English and a second language.� Formal interpretation services may include documented work as a volunteer interpreter for a nonprofit, human service or faith-based organization. Notes: 1.�Candidates may substitute additional experience interpreting and translating between English and a second language on a year-for-year basis for the required education. 2.�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in�Linguist or Language Capability�classifications or�Linguist or Language Capability specialty codes in the Linguistic field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

    DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Proficiency in data entry, strong communication skills and experience working in a fast-paced retail or office environment.� Customer service experience and a strong interest in working with indigent defendants and their families.�

    LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

    Bilingual skills are required for this position.� Applicants must be able to speak, read and write proficiently in both Spanish and English.

    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

    Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

    BENEFITS

    Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. � Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12-month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
