Underwriting Manager manages daily operations of the underwriting process. Implements underwriting strategy and operational policies for product lines. Being an Underwriting Manager oversees the review and approval process for decisions and recommendations related to complex cases. Defines and establishes procedures for risk criteria, application and renewal, and acceptance and rejection. Additionally, Underwriting Manager develops underwriting team expertise with coaching, support and educational programs. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a senior manager. The Underwriting Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be an Underwriting Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Employee wellness programs and more Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Oversees employees in functions of the team/unit/department. Has accountability for the risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability (per divisional objectives) decisions made by members of the team/unit. Empowers employees to use independent judgment and initiative to support business goals. Oversees analysis of coverage and limit requests and decisions for what terms to offer. Ensures business is priced in accordance with company guidelines. Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions. Ensures that appropriate reports are available, accessed and appropriately used for rating and underwriting processes. Ensures that effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers are developed and maintained in order to attract and retain profitable business. Ensures the provision of excellent customer service. Develops and monitors management reports on service levels, activity, and customer experience. Makes appropriate recommendations for and implements improvements. Administers, applies, and may update underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations. Analyzes quality and quantity of risks underwritten and prepares reports to communicate this information. Ensures that the team meets performance targets. Responsible for performance and coaching of staff and decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management. Ensures new members of the team receive proper training. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience Field of Study: Business, Liberal Arts or a related discipline. Experience: 5 to 8 years of years of related experience, including 1 to 3 years of leadership experience. May be in the process of obtaining or may have already completed certification in area of expertise; appropriate certifications could include Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Program in General Insurance (INS) or Associate of Risk Management (ARM).
