Waste Water Treatment Plant Manager supervises the operations and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant to ensure compliance with regulatory procedures and reporting practices. Oversees sampling and testing systems, and the testing and maintenance of pumps, conveyors, blowers, and other equipment. Being a Waste Water Treatment Plant Manager ensures staff is up-to-date with all federal, state, and local regulations and environmental guidelines. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or other tech degree. Additionally, Waste Water Treatment Plant Manager typically reports to a manager or director. The Waste Water Treatment Plant Manager supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. Water Treatment Plant Operator

  • Performs technical work assisting in the operation of the water treatment plant, taking samples, performing routine tests, ensuring proper plant operation, maintaining records and files, preparing reports and performing related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor.

    Starting salary is dependent on qualifications and experience as follows:
    Trainee Hiring Salary: $40,189 
    Water Treatment Plant Operator I (C-Level) Hiring Salary: Grade 58: $42,198 
    Water Treatment Plant Operator II (B-Level) Hiring Salary: Grade 60: $46,522
    Water Treatment Plant Operator III (A-Level) Hiring Salary: Grade 62: $51,291
    • Makes regular inspections of plant and equipment to ascertain that it is in proper operation at all times; monitors water plant operations including water flow, chemical feeds, tank levels, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, clarifiers, chlorinators, and other equipment and advises and assists when appropriate corrective action is required.
    • Monitors chemical feed rates and chemical pumps, mixes and prepares chemicals as needed and receives and stores chemical shipments.
    • Assists with unloading, storage and dumping of bulk chemicals.
    • Collects water samples; performs standard chemical and biological tests relating to plant operations, completes lab analysis of treated and untreated water to ensure quality, makes chemical  and other adjustments as needed and back washes filters.
    • Communicates with supervisor and other operators regarding plant operations and issues to be addressed. 
    • Records data from various meters, gauges and dials and maintains various records and logs on plant operations. 
    • Performs general preventive maintenance, scheduled maintenance and minor repairs and performs routine checks on pumps and motors; maintains lift stations and water pumps.
    • Performs routine building and grounds maintenance including cleaning and painting. 
    • Responds to customer complaints and inquiries.
    • Conducts safety inspections at the water plant and maintains requires records for audit.
    • Conducts safety meetings and trainings as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Grade C Surface Water Treatment Operator certification strongly preferred; or a high school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the operation of a water treatment plant or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • General knowledge of water treatment plant principles and operating practices; 
    • Some knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant; 
    • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of the necessary safety precautions; 
    • Ability to detect flaws in the operation of equipment and to effect proper remedial measures; 
    • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; 
    • Ability to read meters and charts accurately; 
    • Some skill in the use and care of hand tools; 
    • Ability to keep records and prepare reports and 
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

    Physical Requirements 
    This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handling or feeling, frequently requires standing, walking, speaking, hearing, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling and occasionally requires sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
     
    Special Requirements 
    Ability to obtain Grade C Surface Water Treatment Operator certification within one year of employment.
