Be Kind: Layoffs Are Not Employees' Fault
We don't have to be angry and blame people when business relationships end. Sometimes things just don't work out and no one is to blame.
But most layoffs are entirely the organization's responsibility. We need to acknowledge that.
People suddenly lose their jobs because of decisions the employer made about its business, strategy, and needs. A company doesn't get to major layoffs without knowing it's coming. It is sudden for the employees because the employer waited as long as possible to get stuff done first.
It's also good to remember that we are in a permanent labor shortage for the foreseeable future. While there will be industry fluctuations and shifts in how work is done, population is declining and our immigration policies are a political volleyball.
You will probably need some of those employees back down the line. So be kind, offer severance to ease the transition, and remember layoffs are not employees' fault. They have every right to be upset.
